About the Study Day
The ‘Spanish Flu,’ which broke out in 1918 killed more than 50 million people, yet is relatively unknown. It was a worldwide pandemic yet was experienced in families and local communities. Its consequences were seen in the long queues outside doctors and pharmacists, factories that lost production, schools and the cinemas that were closed and in an unprecedented and unmanageable demand for undertaker’s services.
This Study Day will explore the context, histories and science that surrounds the Spanish Flu and why it remains interesting for contemporary scientists.
The Venue
The event will take place at The George Marshall Medical Museum which is situated in the Charles Hastings Education Centre, an education and training facility for health care staff in Worcestershire. The Museum exhibits Mr. George Marshall's fantastic collection of objects illustrating the way that medicine and health care have developed over the past 250 years. Visitors to the Museum will see the gory collection of death masks of hanged criminals, the reconstructed apothecary shop and Victorian operating theatre.
