VE Day 75

We hope you can all do something to mark #VEDayAtHome. At GMMM, we'll be observing the two-minute silence at 11am, and hopefully there'll be a cake (or two!). Not forgetting all of those who served on the Home Front, here's a photograph from our collection of the Worcester Home Guard.

Worcester’s Home Guard

Worcester’s Home Guard

Set up in 1942 as Britain's 'last line of defence', many members of the Infirmary staff joined what was originally the LDV (Local Defence Volunteers), and a copy of this photograph is on display in our War Surgery case alongside the medals they were awarded.

Winston Churchill announced the end of the War in Europe with a speech broadcast from Downing St on 8 May 1945. He said "we may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing, but let us not forget for a moment the toils and efforts that lie ahead".

We’ll meet again.

GUEST BLOG FROM A WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENT: SOPHIA

As a history student at the University of Worcester, working at the George Marshall Medical Museum as part of my history work experience module has been an invaluable experience and has given me insight into the heritage and museum sector.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the museum staff, providing informative tours and fun workshops to primary schools. The museum’s extensive collection has allowed me to partake in research on the local area, particularly Worcester’s importance to the development of medicine and healthcare. The transcribing of oral documents has been fascinating and has helped me to recognise that interviews are crucial to understanding the experiences of individuals. I have learnt and developed a variety of skills and have realised the importance of collection care and management. Reflecting upon this experience, I have uncovered a new career avenue that I could possibly venture into after my undergraduate degree.

It has been a privilege to have worked at the George Marshall Medical Museum. The museum staff are pivotal to the heritage sector, to the continuation of historical documentation in Worcestershire and are attentive to the needs of those doing work experience. I would highly recommend this museum and team to any humanities student at university or college looking to do work experience or volunteering.

Museums are now closed

Due to COVID-19 the medical museums are now closed until further notice. This will be reviewed following the latest updates and guidance for coronavirus. This is to ensure we can keep staff, volunteers and visitors safe.
