GUEST BLOG FROM A WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENT: SOPHIA

As a history student at the University of Worcester, working at the George Marshall Medical Museum as part of my history work experience module has been an invaluable experience and has given me insight into the heritage and museum sector.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the museum staff, providing informative tours and fun workshops to primary schools. The museum’s extensive collection has allowed me to partake in research on the local area, particularly Worcester’s importance to the development of medicine and healthcare. The transcribing of oral documents has been fascinating and has helped me to recognise that interviews are crucial to understanding the experiences of individuals. I have learnt and developed a variety of skills and have realised the importance of collection care and management. Reflecting upon this experience, I have uncovered a new career avenue that I could possibly venture into after my undergraduate degree.

It has been a privilege to have worked at the George Marshall Medical Museum. The museum staff are pivotal to the heritage sector, to the continuation of historical documentation in Worcestershire and are attentive to the needs of those doing work experience. I would highly recommend this museum and team to any humanities student at university or college looking to do work experience or volunteering.
