GUEST BLOG FROM A WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENT: BRIGENA

For my work experience, I joined up with George Marshall Medical Museum for 3 days and I’m pleased to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time working alongside this opportunity. I have gained many potential life skills for working around an interaction placement, learning many new things about medical health through time and how it’s helped us develop our medical care in need to help patients.

On my first day, I took part in observing a tour that talked about surgeons and how they hospitalised patients during amputations. I found this relatively interesting as I have myself studied this part of history in high school. The topic ‘the renaissance’ actually inspired me to do history at an A level standard. After the tour, I completed worksheets personally made by myself to add to the trail I was preparing for Tuesday and Wednesdays tour. I gained skills in interaction to people and making/ creating activities for children to take part in whilst having their fun visit to the museum.

On my second day, I invested some creative time into making a small set up for the trail. This meant getting tables, hanging up banners, setting all seats in position, handling colouring equipment with care and leaving sheets on tables for children/adults to use. The worksheets I was making on Monday were used by the children and turned out in the result we wanted. Children participated in the trail and enjoyed themselves. Later on, I started to fill in sheets about an interview with a nurse named Alison. Listening to the oral history interview and typing down when they had a speaking time and how long it was for. Funny enough I quite enjoyed this activity.

On my third and last day here, I continued to complete the oral history interview sheet. The interview I was working on was quite interesting as it was about a nurse who had gone through a horrendous load of training to become professional and how it impacted her and what had inspired her to do nursing as a career. After I completed this oral interview. I started looking through old scrapbooks that included about the doctor’s pasts, marriages, hospital experiences and new advances like the scanner. It was all very interesting to look at and understand how nurses and hospitality care was invested back in the 1930s onwards to the 1990s.

I’d like to say that my work experience at George Marshall Medical Museum has been spectacular. There hasn’t been a problem with anything that I’ve had to do and the staff members there are extremely nice. A large thank you for having me on board with this half term work experience.
