Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May, 1820.
In 2017 one of George Marshall Medical Museum’s volunteers (Emily) created a temporary exhibition about Florence Nightingale using the Museum’s copy of her ‘Notes on Hospitals’ to find out what advice Worcester Infirmary may or may not have taken in extending their own buildings and wards.
Items displayed included the Museum’s copy of ‘Notes on Hospitals’, and plans held in the collection showing a proposed extension (images shown on this page).
You can view the three exhibition panels, by clicking on the links below (.pdf copies of the panels will open in new windows on your device).
Thanks to this exhibition, the Museum could afford to conserve the copy of ‘Notes on Hospitals’, as part of its Adopt a Book Scheme, which still runs.
Also held in the collection of the George Marshall Medical Museum is a framed letter from Florence Nightingale to her housekeeper, dated 1899. Click on the image to find out more about it.
