OUTSIDE THE ASYLUM

Can you help George Marshall Medical Museum with a spot of family history research to find out about some people who were admitted to the Worcester City and County Lunatic Asylum in the 19th century?

Our aim is to share more patients’ stories, and to find out about their lives before admission and (where possible) after discharge.

EMMA CASTLE’S CASE NOTES

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT EMMA CASTLE

Emma Castle was born Emma Loveridge in 1849 in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire, to Richard and Sarah Loveridge. After the death of her mother in 1854, Emma moved in with her Aunt and Uncle, William and Mary Loveridge, in Ledbury, whilst her father lived and worked at a local Inn. Emma later lived in Worcester, where she worked as a general servant for Alfred and Eliza Burroughs.

On the 19th of July, 1880, Emma married Lawrence Castle in Worcester, where they then lived together. Lawrence Castle was a Journeyman Baker from Thame, Oxfordshire, and had previously been married to Sarah Webb. His three children Sarah, George, and James lived with him and Emma. The family later moved to Chaddesley Corbett.

Emma Castle was admitted on multiple occasions to Powick Asylum, first in December of 1888, and for the last time in May of 1891. It is unknown what happened to Emma in the years after 1900, but we know that she was still a patient at Powick in 1911, as listed in the census, and that she died on the 10th of May, 1914.
