Stoma surgery, which involves creating an abdominal opening to divert bodily waste, has evolved significantly since its early attempts in the 18th and 19th centuries. Initial procedures often had high mortality rates due to rudimentary techniques and lack of antibiotics. Major advancements came in the mid-20th century, notably with Eugene Bricker's development of a reliable urinary diversion method. These innovations improved the safety and efficacy of ileostomies and colostomies, greatly enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life
