Hip prosthesis

Metal hip prosthetics have revolutionized orthopaedic surgery, providing mobility and pain relief to millions with hip joint conditions such as arthritis or fractures. Introduced in the mid-20th century, these implants, made from durable materials like stainless steel, titanium, and cobalt-chromium alloys, represent a significant medical advancement. While hip replacements restore joint function and reduce disability for many, the recovery process and potential complications can themselves be disabling. This prosthetic highlights both the transformative impact and the challenges associated with joint replacement surgery.

Whilst the majority of hip replacement surgeries are not classified as disabilities, there are instances where a full recovery is not made and the patient is disabled by the surgery. As the sugery is a hidden procedure and not usually resulting in disability status, it is important to highlight the fact that this can be the reality for some people.
